Ethnological museums are the subject of much and intense debate, not only about their colonial past, but also about their future relevance and role in society. With the project Re:INVENTING GRASSI.SKD our museum is embarking on a multi-layered restructuring project.

Our collection and its History

The collections of the State Ethnographic Collections of Saxony (SES) in Leipzig, Dresden and Herrnhut are here presented in short profiles. According to the classification system of the ethnological museums established in the colonial context, the collections are divided by continents.

Collections

 

The collection of the Dresden court councilor and librarian Gustav Klemm formed the basis for the Leipzig Ethnological Museum, which today holds around 200.000 objects. You can learn more about the history of the museum and its current restructuration here.
