Verlässt ein Mensch sein Zuhause, bedeutet dies immer Abschied. Melodien und Lieder sind Begleiter in der Ferne, denn sie knüpfen das Band zwischen Hier und Dort, zwischen den einzelnen Stationen der Reise und dem Früher und Jetzt. Die Auflösung der räumlichen Bindung zur Familie und zu Freunden ist ein schmerzlicher Vorgang. Seit mehr als einem Jahrhundert arbeiten junge Männer der heutigen Inselstaaten Tuvalu und Kiribati außerhalb ihrer Heimat.
Als Arbeitsmigranten verlassen sie ihre Inseln, um etwa als Seeleute auf Container- und Tankschiffen für Monate und Jahre von ihren Familien und Freunden getrennt zu sein. Heute begeben sich sowohl Frauen als auch Männer zu Ausbildung, Arbeit oder Studium von ihren Inseln fort. Am Flughafen erhalten sie zum Abschied auch Ketten aus Seeschneckengehäusen. Zusammen mit den Melodien und Liedern ihrer Inseln nehmen sie diese mit auf die Reise durch das Dazwischen, als festen Anker der Erinnerung. Die Lieder erzählen als Parabel ebenso von gefährlichen Erlebnissen im Zwischenraum, in dem etwa Fischer von gigantischen Meeresbewohnern bedroht werden und nur durch größte Mühe wieder an die rettende Küste gelangen.

If a person leaves his place of origin it always means farewell. Melodies and songs are the distant companions that link here and there together, each individual stage of the journey and the past with what is happening now. The dissolution of the spatial bond to family and friends is a painful process. For more than a century, young men of the island nations of Tuvalu and Kiribati work away from their home. As migrant workers, they leave their islands to be seamen on container ships and tankers for months and years, separated from their families and friends. Today, both women and men leave their island in search of education, work and the chance to study. At the airport they receive chains of seashells while saying farewell. Together with the melodies and songs of their islands, they take the chains with them on the journey through the space in-between, as a solid anchor for the memory. The songs tell also of the dangerous experiences in the space in-between, in which fishers are threatened by giant sea creatures and only make it back ashore with great difficulty.
