GRASSI Invites #1: Fremd

The SES is starting its series “GRASSI Invites” with the cooperative project FREMD. From 2016 artists, refugee associations and scientists are invited in this format to develop exhibitions on current political topics and present developments. The exhibition project FREMD is dedicated to the creation of foreignness at the museum: Through what — through which forms of presentation, through which dimensions of demonstration — does something become foreign?

  • DATES 29/01/2016—08/05/2016

text

The artistic works displayed in the context of the FREMD exhibition, which comprise the media types film, installation, sculpture, photography and glass painting, reflect the construction of foreignness at the ethnological museum by making the typical forms of presentation for this museum type visible, thus making them an object of discussion. This occurs both in the permanent exhibition in the form of interventions, which react directly to the local situation, and in the special exhibition rooms in which the project experiences a spatial concentration. Twenty students from Clemens von Wedemeyer’s Expanded Cinema class and from Benjamin Meyer-Krahmer’s seminar representation focus their attention on this topic.

A form of cooperation by the GRASSI Museum für Völkerkunde zu Leipzig with the Hochschule für Grafik und Buchkunst Leipzig (HGB).
