Sri Lanka’s Smile. Photographs by Knut Stritzke

The photographer Knut Stritzke travelled to Sri Lanka with his camera in 2007. Photographs that were taken there show the faces of different people. Their eyes tell stories about joy, their hopes, but also about strokes of fate. The GRASSI Ethnographical Museum in Leipzig shows these photographs in their special exhibition “Sri Lanka’s Smile”.

text1

Sri Lanka was a very intense experience for Knut Stritzke. It was a place of friendliness in which he travelled openly without any bias. He wanted to photograph the land and its people without any prejudices to capture the individual’s essence and nature’s beauty. He met people who are deeply rooted and have both feet on the ground. Stritzke wanted to document the signs that were revealed to him in their faces and in their posture. Truth is found in the moment. The present contains all that is important. You only need to be able to read the signs and then they tell you something about the past and the future.
