Since 2019, the SES has been working with colleagues from the Memorial University of Newfoundland and with representatives of Inuit communities in Nunatsiavut/Labrador. Labrador Inuit objects in the collections are documented with photographs and 3D scans to build a database at community centres and libraries in Labrador. The database will help to revive lost cultural techniques (e.g. traditional embroidery patterns) on site. In addition, the return of ancestral remains from our collections to Labrador is being prepared and the ethical handling of sensitive community objects (e.g. grave goods) is being discussed together.
