In der Installation Heimatdüfte / Scents of Home von Antje Baecker teilen Menschen unterschiedlicher Generationen und Herkunft ihre persönlichen Duft-Erinnerungen und -Assoziationen mit. Sie alle eint ein Schicksal: der Verlust der Heimat durch Krieg. Vor ihrem Aufbruch waren Geflüchtete dort von Düften umgeben, die sie jetzt vermissen. Wiedergefundene Gerüche erinnern an schöne Momente oder entbehrungsreiche Zeiten im Leben. Sie führen den Betreffenden zurück in ein vermisstes Zuhause oder geben die Zuversicht auf ein Ankommen. Gerüche navigieren die Reisenden durch das Dazwischen unterschiedlicher Orte und bleiben selbst zeitlos.

We are in transit between different places and move within different areas of experience. But within all of this we suddenly smell the memories of something from the past or that has been left back behind. Smells conjure up positive, negative or ambivalent feelings within us depending on what experiences we associate with them. In Antje Beacker’s installation home fragrances - Home scents, people of different generations and origins convey their personal memories and associations towards different smells.

They all share a common fate: the loss of their homeland and their own home due to war. There are the scents that the fugitives miss because these smells were the last things they perceived before they left. However, new or rediscovered smells recall beautiful moments or harsh times in life. They take those back to a home that they painfully miss or offer a foresight to the arrival at a new home. Smells navigate the traveler through the space of in-between of different times and places.
